There are methodological challenges with creating a comparable crash rate version of this benchmark, because the exact amount of VMT for a “NIEON” like driver is not readily available to quantify benchmarks, primarily due to the fact that human drivers are not always in a NIEON state when driving. In other work from Swiss Re in collaboration with Waymo (in peer review), Waymo’s third party claims rates have been compared to human drivers driving the latest-generation vehicles. This represents another, higher performing subset of human-driven vehicles because latest-generation vehicles typically have improved safety features.
